SSL Certificates คือเครื่องหมายรับรองความปลอดภัยทางอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ ที่ออกหรืออนุมัติโดย CA (Certificate Authority) ที่คุ้นหูและรู้จักกันก็มี Verisign,Thawte และ GeoTrust
การรับรองนั้น CA แต่ละที่ก็จะมีการตรวจสอบ ชื่อที่อยู่ บริษัท ตลอดจนเว็บเซิร์ฟเวอร์ เพื่อพิจารณาก่อนที่จะอนุมัติ SSL Certificate ให้แก่เว็บไซต์นั้นๆ ทำให้ SSL Certificate เป็นเหมือนเครื่องหมายยืนยัน ความปลอดภัยของเว็บไซต์ สร้างความสบายใจให้แก่ลูกค้าได้ทางหนึ่ง
นำมาใช้ใน website โดย CA จะเป็นตัวกลางในการยืนยันการติดต่อและเข้ารหัส ป้องกันข้อมูล ระหว่าง ต้นทางกับปลายทาง
โดยมากจะใช้กับหน้าเว็บในส่วนที่ต้องการให้มีความปลอดภัยสูง เช่น ระบบ Shopping Cart , Login , ฯลฯ
การทำงานทั้งหมดของ SSL จะใช้ port พิเศษ คือ 443 เวลาเรียกใช้งานจะเรียกผ่าน URL เป็น https://www.domain.com/ โดย Web server ต้องทำการติดตั้ง SSL Certificates ลงไปก่อน
